Sucker Punch
Score: 5,5/10
Zack Snyder is a filmmaker who never goes low-priced when it comes to the visualization of a film. I’ll even come clean to giving him a pass on story because he gets premium marks for a great looking work, but there aren’t adequate bonus points in the universe to excuse all of the malfunctions, of which there are scores of, in this particular picture. The film indeed doesn’t start off badly. It shows the main character, Babydoll, driven from her home to a house for the insane in a brilliantly revealed title on the rain-splashed window of the 1960s car that’s transporting her to her new nightmare. Later, as its 109 minutes tick away, the film plunging us into Babydoll’s imagination as it echoes the idea popularized by “Inception” that dreams exist within dreams, showcases with Snyder’s evident love of digitally enhanced, over-the-top ultra-violence in super slo-mo style. Yes, there’s arresting imagination and visuals sprinkled throughout this one, like a video game within a video game, but unlike “Inception” that clearly seem like the influence, “Sucker” never employed the guiding intelligence behind the stunning style of that far superior movie. The story was the weakest part of things, it really doesn’t care at making you care about the characters or get involved with the emotional aspect of their journey. Snyder placed too much weight on the action aspects and not enough on making us concern about the persons who involved in it. There isn’t a performance that worth mentioning either. It’s as if the cast members were merely employed as props. The actresses are all flat and they just go around blowing stuffs while the costume departments stuffing them into set of clothes that make them look like either innocent little girls or hookers. By now, Snyder has given away that he is a specialist when it comes to illustrating flashy visuals, but it'll only be when he hitches those to a likewise beguiling plot that he'll actually turn into a visionary filmmaker.
Let The Bullets Fly
Score: 7.5/10
A new film and latest box office hit from one of the bad boys of Chinese cinema, Jiang Wen, follows the carnage surrounding a bloody battle of wits between a bandit and a gangster in a remote town set in 1920s China. The fast-paced movie, which also stars Hong Kong star Chow Yun-Fat and local favorite Ge You, has won acclaim from critics for its satirical treatment of the corruption and graft plaguing contemporary China.
At its most essential, the narrative is a Chinese version of the evergreen Robin Hood legend, but this entertaining Oriental Western is crafted out of the ordinary by the admirable little elements – smart script balanced with striking photography, architecture, interior décor and 1920s fashion. The writing, in particular, is pleasurable, it has intelligent and manages to throw in a lot of humor. The brilliantly scripted combat tactics and humorous chat among the loquacious characters is an enchantment to the ears that resembles freestyle rap encounters. Alas, the intricacy of the banter will be mostly lost in translation to viewers reliant on subtitles. The three leading men are all at the top of their game as they shares acting masterclass and magnificent onscreen chemistry. One of the best scenes in the movie is absolutely the negotiation that ensues between these three, Chow as the rogue warlord of Goose Town, Huang; Ge as the weasel of a swindler/advisor, Tang and Jiang as the Robin Hood-like bandit, Pockmarked Zhang. Anyway, the filmmaker should improvise on the special effect cause obviously it was the weakness point in this movie.
Space Battleship Yamato
Score: 6/10
The "Space Battleship Yamato" franchise, known abroad under such titles as "Star Blazers" and "Space Cruiser Yamato," embarked on its journey in 1974 as a TV cartoon space opera, then spawned a hit animated film in 1977. Two more TV series and four more films followed, concluding the saga with the 1983 feature "Final Yamato." Hype over Takashi Yamazaki's modern live-action film "Space Battleship Yamato" has been building in Japan and abroad since it was announced in the summer of 2009. Reasons were the ¥2 billion budget, a huge amount for a Japanese film that has been lavished on effects, and a mega-star at its helm.
As one nostalgic guilty pleasure, space-warping from anime to live action “Yamato” certainly has engaging action with plenty of gadgets, rockets, and spacecraft dogfights to please most sci-fi fans out there. With an excuse for some dodgy CG particularly in third-act, the special effects are all meticulously and intricately crafted. Though, the battle scenes show some exclusive feels, but it told with the common visual language of Hollywood sci-fi blockbusters; dogfighting spaceships zooming around the flaming carcasses of huge interstellar warships, lens flares and fancy explosions in abundance. Some of the film’s shortcomings range from cheesy overwrought storytelling, the lack of a proper introduction on characters and their development to hazy direction and some superficial acting. “Yamato” is also plotted like its Hollywood buddies, as big action scenes cut short the dramatics with conventional regularity. The culmination, on the other hand, is rather Japanese in sentiment, if Hollywood in degree.

thanks for the reviews.
what's your final rating for space battleship yamato?
lets the bullet fly is awesomely hilarious, i want to watch it again.
never knew sucker punch is going to get such poor receptions, but i'll only watch it for those almost naked girls and crazy scenes ^^
OK, i agree visual is pretty punching but story is so suck! thankfully he had resources from a director like Nolan who is strong on story for superman film.
Sucker only works for those who are already obsessed with 300. The film is a waste of time and money that I can never get back.
These reviews are very lyrical and descriptive. I'm especially interested in Let the Bullets Fly as I am currently writing a tale set along the Silk Road in 1929, the bulk of which takes place in China. And I love Chow Yun Fat. Alas I am among the number who must read subtitles, but I do love to listen to the rhythms of language and speech. That line in your review about the chat among the loquacious characters being an enchantment to the ears is sublime.
I am going to see Sucker Punch today and though I have read your review, I'm reserving judgment.
Those r very interesting reviews friend. as a fan of yamato series, i seriously can't wait to watch the live action film.
sucker punch was really weird it was like a really bad Shawshank Redemption sequel 'the Shawskank Redemption'
I was really hoping to like SP and thought it looked like it could be good. I don't really like Snyder's last films. Maybe I was just thinking optimistically cause I want Superman to be good. But this was horrible. Just plain bad
@Jay
You're welcome. I gave the film 6 out of 10 :)
@Brclay
You know, those are the only good things of the film :)
@Flavius
I also hope everything will be good for Man of Steel. The script also was crafted by Nolan and Goyer, two people who know how to tell a story.
@Anonym
I liked 300 anyway but of course not so obsessed :)
@Mel
You're such a sweetheart, Mel! Have such a wonderful compliment from a professional writer like you, it just made me flattered :)
It's so great to know you are writing a tale set along the Silk Road in 1929, China. I believe it will be an awesome addition to your already impressive creations!
And I just can't wait to read your opinion for Sucker Punch.
@Ixe
Thank you my friend! I wish you have a great time with the film, I think it will be an entertaining watch for the anime series as well.
@Anonym
LOL. I can't even imagine about that hilarious title :)
@VeV
I was really hoping the film will be good too but it surely has just adding a negative impression for Snyder in the end.
the plot was sort of confusing and hard to follow but both the effects and the girls were visually appealing.
let the bullet and space battleship sounds interesting, i'll check those 2!
Anime is levels above most of Hollywood when it comes to just about everything, but people refuse to give it credit since it's animated. What's funny about that is the fact that a lot of live-action movies are also animated with CG.
but I love Jamie Chung and Vanessa Hudgens! Must see...horrible Sucker Punch...movie....ahhhhhh
thanks for the post man! Following you now :)
Have a great day please!
i think i'm sold on the trailer but after reading your review, i have to rethink about this sucker punch film.
In my opinion, Vanessa is one of the more notable actresses of the bunch, plus this one was along way away from “High School Musical.” Well,anyways, I gave the movie an A grade for sheer entertainment :D
@Magnums
Glad to have your opinion. You definitely must check those 2 films.
@Anonym
Thanks for sharing the opinion. It's really interesting.
@MRanthrope
Maybe the film will be less horrible for you, Jamie Chung and Vanessa Hudgens are quite eye-candies anyway :)
@elexerdelex
You're welcome and thanks for following. Followed your blog as well.
@Lopez
Yes it once hailed as being among the more anticipated cinematic outings of the year, but it was unleashed in theaters only to be met with an overwhelming amount of quite a poor reception.
@Kev
I'm agree her performance was along way away from the past but it's still equally flat in my opinion :) However, I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the film.
Oh my goodness you are so right about Sucker Punch!! I just saw it tonight and I am soo disappointed! I really had high hopes for this. I thought the soundtrack was wonderful though. lol. You described this film perfectly. It was literally a video game within a video game which drove me crazy. I know this will be great to some audiences but I couldn't do it. However the girls looked beautiful! : ) Great review!!
One thing for sure, Zack Snyder can't write :D
@Nic
Thanks, Nic. Glad that we have same opinion about this film. The soundtrack is actually something beyond average :)
@JJ
You bet he is, buddy :)
I've seen quite a lot of bad criticism on SUCKER PUNCH, mostly coming from fanboys, which means I'll probably like the film :))
I can't wait to watch YAMATO, you know how I love me some good intergalactic sf!
I certainly really aware of your taste, buddy :) I hope you have a great time with Yamato, it wasn't nearly as good as Star Trek, but still enjoyable for intergalactic sf fans ;)
I actually didn't mind Sucker Punch as most seemed to. I can get past the script being shallow and weak, because I knew it would be. It could've done with a bit more action I think, but overall I had a fun time with it. Snyder definitely is something of a master in his own rights when it comes to visuals and style and he showed it with Sucker Punch. Of course he's really lacking in talent when it comes to writing, which he also showed with Sucker Punch. But overall I liked it well enough. Wasn't a great movie by any means at all, but I had fun.
It's good to have your opinion on this one, JL. The film really proven that Snyder is lacking in writing talent.
great post. following you
Thank you :)
Fantastic reviews!
I'm going to see Sucker Punch this week and though I am harboring a great deal of skepticism, I am reserving judgment. Your review is pretty much commensurate with most I've read. I'm glad you didn't take the approach of others, and simply give it a 1 out of 10 or something ridiculous like that. I mean, it can't be that bad...I hope.
never heard of the space battleship yamato franchise. sounds kewl
@Matt
Thanks, buddy! It's good that you reserve your judgement before watching it. I gave it 5 because it really have some brilliant visuals while the film was ultimately soulless. Anyway, can't wait to read your review.
@duff
Wait until you see the look of the battleship, it's so really kewl :)
It seems like everyone is giving suckerpunch a bad rating and review... but i still want to see it either way
Welcome and thanks for following and comment, POP. Following you too!
Sucker Punch really was horrible, felt like a Dora episode for adults. It was a movie which was just way too long and had too little story to leave any lasting impression or involvement from the viewer. It's a film I really wanted to see, but left it utterly disappointed.
I second your opinion, Nostra. I also left this one utterly disappointed.
wow SBY looks cool, i might rent it :3
I think you should rent the film :) Thanks for following.
And the low scores for Sucker Punch continue. So much hype, understandably given Snyder's credentials, but the film can't live up to it. Having a cast of hot lady actors probably helps sell a few cinema tickets though.
Those hot ladies didn't help really much either :) The $82 million Zack Snyder flick looks to be doomed financially, unless an overseas campaign can save it.
