Fourth “Pirates of Caribbean” movie, “On Stranger Tides”, raises the qualm if it will live up to the wild triumph of the original film, or the dramatic action from the second and third installments. Unpromisingly based on a theme park ride, the first effort was a swashbuckling film which returned pirates to the big screen, also have been lauded as classic Disney tales, blending comedy, adventure, and the imagination. This is evident as "The Curse of the Black Pearl" earned over $305 million, "Dead Man’s Chest" earned over $423 million, and "At World’s End" earned over $309 million. While critically, the reaction is more akin to "The Matrix" trilogy - a modern classic of a first film, a deeply flawed disappointment of a sequel with occasional inspired moments, and an absolute mess of a third entry that makes little sense in itself, it’s no wonder if Disney is going ahead with another Pirates movie, considering that the franchise has earned them a tremendous amount of money. Even the three-time Academy Award nominee, Johnny Depp, who has conquered the chocolate factory, Neverland, Wonderland, Fleet Street, and also the water streets of Venice, agreed to returns to the rough seas of adventure as the flamboyant, irreverent swashbuckler Captain Jack Sparrow. This franchise isn't anything without Depp though, and the actor rumored earns around $55.5 million to play Sparrow again in this outing. But unfortunately, the trilogy captain Gore Verbinski has eventually left the ship and it’s Rob Marshall who’s now on-board to determine the direction of the new adventure. And as we knew it, Marshall is a director of glorious, gorgeous musicals, not gritty action-adventure movies like Pirates of the Caribbean. I have no clue how he's going to handle a project this epic and with this much salty water, but I hope he doesn't screw it up. And without the return of two other famous cast members, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, hopefully the new movie will be worth watching as well.
Depp himself promised that “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” won’t only feature Sparrow’s odd style and pirates quarrel but also “zombies, cutthroats, mermaids, and the vicious and vivacious Penélope Cruz.” The plot this time draws inspiration from the novel On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers, which is the same novel that inspired the LucasArts game The Secret of Monkey Island. The fantasy novel that won the Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel in 1988 and was also nominated for The World Fantasy award, originally published in 1988, and the main character is also named Jack (Shandy) who tries to find the Fountain of Youth. The Fountain was depicted on a map that Jack Sparrow had in the final moments of the third film, so it being the focus of the story makes logical sense. Obviously however, quite a lot of the book will have to be changed to reflect the existing movie universe (including the major characters) , but Powers was amenable to the changes after getting a promise (joke) from Disney that Depp would have dinner with Powers and his wife and give them cameos in the film. Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) crossing paths with the enigmatic Angelica (Penelope Cruz), which he’s not sure if it’s love—or if she’s a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the “Queen Anne’s Revenge,” the ship of the legendary pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn’t know whom to fear more: Blackbeard or Angelica, with whom he shares a mysterious past. The international cast includes franchise vets Geoffrey Rush as the vengeful Captain Hector Barbossa and Kevin R. McNally as Captain Jack’s longtime comrade Joshamee Gibbs, plus Sam Claflin as a stalwart missionary and Astrid Berges-Frisbey as a mysterious mermaid. Aye. There should be a "Fact" in there somewhere.
# Producer Jerry Bruckheimer indicated that the tone will be much more akin to the first film - a stand-alone, less serious, comedic adventure take that isn't overly saddled with reams of exposition.
# Disney's Head of Production Oren Aviv said that this would "hopefully be the first of another trilogy." He also agreed that there is a lot of Captain Jack Sparrow's back story that we haven't seen yet without confirming or denying that we might see some of that in the fourth movie.
# To keep costs under control, the film's budget restricted to $200 million - $25 million less than "Dead Man's Chest" and $100 million less than "At World's End".
# Shooting ran from mid-June to mid-November with filming at one point in June taking place simultaneously in Hawaii, the United Kingdom, Puerto Rico, the island of Palominos, and Los Angeles.
# It’s the first film in the series which features historical characters like Blackbeard, George II of Great Britain, Henry Pelham, John Carteret, and Ferdinand VI of Spain.
# Cruz pregnancy caused uproar of concern for the film’s production. It was reported that some of her scenes were “tweaked” to hide her growing belly, as well as making adjustments in her shooting schedule to conceal her change in shape.
# Cruz’s younger sister Mónica stood in for her during long-distance shots in order to hide the baby bump.
# Judi Dench pops in for a cameo as a noblewoman who gets to make out with Jack Sparrow.
# While filming in London in October 2010, Depp received a letter from a local 9-year old schoolgirl, telling him her classmates needed help to 'mutiny' against her teachers. He turned up with almost no warning at the school in full Sparrow outfit in support.
# Initial rumors stated the story had Jack Sparrow and Barbossa meeting up in the newly founded New Orleans, before they sail to find the Fountain of Youth together. A production spokesman debunked the rumors, saying that the synopsis is different and even though location scouts visited New Orleans.

27 Thoughts:
this looks like a fancy fun piece of eight, aye? I'm eager to see what Marshall's done with it; he is nothing if not a showman, and maybe that's what the franchise needs.
I'm happy to see Johnny Depp back in his signature eyeliner to play Captain Sparrow, but it doesn't look like there's a ton of magic in the fourth installment of the franchise.
great trivia! although i'm not sure how they're going to keep the story exciting after three installments.
Thanks for this post. Many interesting facts I haven't heard of. I'm a fan of the first three movies, no matter what others think, so I can't wait for it, although I'm not happy with Penelope in this movie. I hope it won't be a flop!
Oh yes, this is going to be good. Jack Sparrow really made the other movies.
I'm a little more interested in this, being that there's a novel to help the story along. Hope this turns out well.
Ah, I'm torn - I've never really liked the saga, and I wouldn't watch it if Tia Dalma isn't in it :) but on the other hand I deeply loooooove Sam Claflin and must watch all of his films.
@Anonym
Aye! :) Maybe Marshall is what the franchise needed but we shall see :)
@Lopez
The trailer looks fun so far but we'll wait and see if there really a ton of magic in this new installment :)
@Jay
Thanks! :) The writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio are aware of how bad Pirates 2 and 3 were, and so they made sure this time with Pirates 4, that they wouldn't get carried away with the story/plot. But we'll see :)
@Lesya
Thanks for stopping by and comment. I'm a fan of the first but didn't like the third film, I hope this can be at least more good than the second film.
I'm actually looking forward to this fourth installment, knowing full well that the last two outings were disappointing (the third was abysmal). With a new director (a sort of complete overhaul), I'm confident Depp can make magic of this story. At least, I'm hopeful this one will at least be entertaining.
@Les
I'm agree. Jack Sparrow might be one of the greatest movie characters ever created.
@Duffboi
I'm also interested to see where this new installment goes. But with a lower budget I think they can't over do it, like they did with the second and third outing.
@Dezzy
I know you're a huge fan of Tia Dalma :) But I think you can still find some new fun here in Claflin :)
@Matt
I also hope Marshall is the right director to revive the series. The trailer shows us a few laughs, some of the promising action sequences, and lots of the man Jack Sparrow :) Hopefully it will be a really entertaining summer flick.
I'm happy to see this one Knightly free as I could not stand her character. Her increased roles in the last two films made it abundantly clear she is not capable of holding a movie. Same with Bloom. I like him, but he's a pretty set piece who needs some polish.
Rob Marshall serves up great breezy drama and tongue-in-cheek humor as was the case in Chicago. I'm looking forward to this and hope that it will not be a disaster.
I love your writing style. It's witty, engaging and very thoughtful.
I am optimistic about the "Pirates... On Stranger Tides" especially since Johnny Depp is returning because like you said without him this "franchise isn't anything." I can honestly live without Bloom and Knightley even though they are great additions. It'll be interesting to see what this new director can produce out of what is left. That was pretty interesting that Cruz's sister stood in for her in some shots. Cool Facts and Great Post!!
Hopefully this lives up to the hype and is as good as the original 2003 classic.
I actually feel that the trailer itself is just kind of boring. I'm still looking forward to it and I cant wait to see what they do with the story, however the trailer keeps showing the same thing over and over again.
@Melissa
Thanks to you Mel! It's great to have such compliment from you :)
I also wish Rob Marshall could eventually serve up a good installment for this series.
@Nicole
Thanks, Nic! I've only gathered some facts that I've found in the web :)
@JJ
I hope so, buddy :)
@Fred
I felt the same way but let's hope the real film won't be as boring as the trailer :)
I've actually enjoyed all 3 Pirates movies so far. I'm really excited to see Jack Sparrow back. Depp as that character is just plain awesome.
It will be interesting to see what Rob does with the movie though and how well he does taking over the franchise. It definitely does help that they have some good material to base this off of for this one.
No matter what, though, everything I've seen points to this just being a fun adventure movie.
JL, I'm agree. Sparrow is one of Johnny Depp's best roles. He just seems to have lot of fun with the character and the shows.
Granted, the man dresses like a pirate in real life :)
That sounds more interesting and more exciting, well every Pirates movie is. It's almost May! Yayyy!!!

I'll say it's one of his funnest roles. He's great as the character and he totally made these movies (which is why I have no care that Knightley and Bloom aren't returning like others are somewhat upset about). I can't get enough of some Jack Sparrow.
As for Depp's greatest role in terms of acting ability, I'd actually have to say his role in Fear and Loathing was his best achievement.
am I a bad person if I find these movies extremely boring? :(
sorry for the advertising :( but please, if you have time, please check out my blog on NBA and other stuff. :) I'd love to get new readers.

Welcome and thanks for the comment :)
@JL
Agree! That's Depp's best role. He does play eccentric characters very well and Raoul Duke is about as eccentric as they come.
@Sesam
Welcome, I'd love to get new readers too :)
I'll check your blog soon.
The third movie was totally dire and I shall be missing this one for sure

Jack, I thought the same thing about that third film but I'll give this a chance and see if it'll really get an exciting new direction.
good post
