Over a decade has passed, and Sidney Prescott, who has put herself back together thanks in part to her writing, will again meet her ceaseless arch-enemy, the Ghostface Killer. Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson’s revolutionary slasher “Scream” series was always the most cerebral of the horror movies. The first film (1996) being a reverence of the whole slasher genre with dialogue that satirized the convention, received generally positive reaction among film reviewers. They appreciated the shift from the teen slasher films of the 1980s and their "endless series of laborious, half-baked sequels." Williamson's script also was praised as containing a "fiendishly clever, complicated plot" which "deftly mixes irony, self-reference and wry social commentary with chills and blood spills." It later followed by “Scream 2” (1997) that was a send off of horror sequels and the third and the least successful of the franchise, “Scream 3” (2000), which looked at the arc of trilogy conventions. 2011 will witness the resurrection of ghostface and its victims, who are still fully aware of the trappings and conventions of horror movies. “Scream 4” also reunites the killer with the franchise's principal stars (Courtney Cox, David Arquette and Neve Campbell) along with newcomers Emma Roberts (Valentine's Day), Hayden Panettiere ("Heroes"), Rory Culkin (Signs), Adam Brody (Jennifer's Body), Erik Knudsen (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), Anna Paquin and Kristen Bell as the next crop of potential victims. The question is how will “Scream 4” work, a decade after the last film? Will it be any good? I, for one, am doubtful about the appeal of a fourth Scream film in view of the present state of the horror landscape of torture films and spooky ghosts. A lot of people also were disappointed in the way the “first trilogy” ended. There were no real, big surprises to cap the series off, especially regarding the series’ protagonist, Sidney Prescott. Craven, however, was very sure with his own answer and promises the same tongue-in-cheek approach as the past three, "[Screenwriter] Kevin [Williamson] is right on his game with the new script -- the characters and story crackle with energy and originality -- to say nothing of some of the most hair-raising scares I've seen in a script since....well, since the original Scream series." Well, obviously Williamson has an idea he wants to share here, he is the one who went to The Weinsteins and made a deal to resurrect the series long after it was buried. Also finding out that they have written this new one as the first in another trilogy is quite a good sign. But knowing they have not decided to make 5 and 6 until they determine how box office healthy this 4 does isn’t a fine symptom. Let’s hope “Scream 4” isn’t just a pointlessly unnecessary sequel that pokes fun at the idea of pointlessly unnecessary sequels, which makes it necessary. “Scream 4” will be set ten years later in Woodsboro, and is described as “an ensemble” which will introduce several new characters. The new film will take place a decade later, a decade without the ghostface killer. But that doesn’t mean that movie-within-the-movie-series “Stab” has come to an end. Williamson has said that “Scream 4” will reference manga comics, Asian ghost girl movies, PG-13 horror movies, vampire films, M. Night Shyamalan movies and even torture porn. In the story, Sidney Prescott (Campbell) who’s now the author of a self-help book, returns home to Woodsboro on the last stop of her book tour. There she reconnects with Sheriff Dewey (Arquette) and Gale (Cox), who are now married, as well as her cousin Jill (Roberts) and her Aunt Kate (Mary McDonnell). Unfortunately Sidney's appearance also brings about the return of Ghostface, putting Sidney, Gale, and Dewey, along with Jill, her friends, and the whole town of Woodsboro in danger. The fourth chapter rewrites the facts:
# Craven who has a cameo in the movie stated he was not going to return as director unless the script was as good as the first “Scream”.
# With four installments, this landmarks the Scream franchise as being one of the only horror franchises to have its main characters return for all its sequels.
# The film suffered two casting changes in quick succession as shooting had begun. Lake Bell had originally been cast as Judy Hicks but was forced to drop out (which she announced via her Twitter account on June 24th 2010) due to "scheduling conflicts." She was replaced by Marley Shelton. Six days later, Lauren Graham, who was originally cast as Kate Kessler, dropped out also citing "scheduling conflicts" as well as "script changes." She was replaced by Mary McDonnell.
# Ashley Greene was considered for the lead role, but ultimately, Emma Roberts was cast.
# At a table read on June 25, 2010, the actors were told to stop reading at page 75 to prevent those already cast in the film from knowing the climax. The script is reportedly 140 pages long.
# In May of 2010, Cathy Konrad, the producer of all three previous movies in the Scream series, filed a lawsuit against the Weinstein Company stating her production company had a first-rights deal with the Weinstein Company to produce all films in the Scream series. The lawsuit was eventually dropped.
# Patrick Dempsey was rumored to reprise his role from “Scream 3” (2000). The writer, Kevin Williamson, claimed the rumor to be false. Also, Dempsey would be filming “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” (2011) at the same time for shooting Scream 4, where as it would be unlikely to have the availability to reprise his role.
# Alison Brie who play Sidney's personal assistant and Aimee Teegarden returned to Northville on January 31 and February 1, 2011 to shoot two new scenes. Craven explained the scenes are "one scene that's kind of in the late beginning and one scene that's a little bit later".

38 Thoughts:
i loved the first one while the other 2 were ok, and i guess i'm very, very cautiously optimistic with this fourth film (^_^)
Looks like another fun time at the movies. The first is one of my favorites, it's just a guilty pleasure I enjoy watching.
Time line is always an issue, they wait to long and lose the crowd that grew up with it. It would be better if there was a fresh start, something new perhaps. Maybe this will be the machine that launches the birth of more Scream. Me, I dream of a new series... Great research on this post; Well Done!
I hope Scream 4 is good. My Soul To Take was awful.
I was a little upset when I heard that they're making Scream 4 cuz I thought Scream 3 ended just fine. But I don't think Wes Craven or none of the original members would return if the script wasn't good. I got a feeling that one of the original characters will get killed off this time.
@Ixe
I liked the first one than the other two either. You've right to be very cautiously optimistic on this one :)
@Vev
Yep, I hope we'll have a lot of fun time with ghostface this time around :)
@Ella
Well said, Ella! I completely agree with you and thanks for the compliment :)
@Anonym
Hope Craven won't repeat the same mistake here.
@Kevner
I'm actually really intrigued about who will really be the next victim of ghostface among those three :)
I agree. I am skeptical about this fourth installment. I did also enjoy the first film, but that was it—the others were bland, trite, and unremarkable.
Good rundown!
I loved the first and my affections went down with each successive sequel. This fourth film has me intrigued, but with a heavy dose of caution. I'll be there opening night, though, because that is part of the fun of these movies, seeing them with a theater full of people. Thanks for the info. Did not know about the casting changes.
I gotta say I was also skeptical when I first heard about a fourth "Scream." However, I am now excited to see what it has to offer. It seems to have a decent cast, especially since some of the original cast members are returning. It definitely has the potential I hope it can deliver.
I'm a big fan of the first, but was unimpressed with 2 and completely bored with 3. I'll see it, but I'm not too hopeful.
the april release dates says a lot about the studio's confidence in the film. i'm really excited to see this now.
Well since i watched this franchise from the start i wont miss this, but it does look fresh, and fun to me.
@Matty
Thanks, buddy! We shall see if Craven is able to prove us wrong.
@Melissa
Thanks, Mel! I'm agree with you, seeing this with a theater full of people screaming, laughing and cringing would be so much entertaining.
@Nicole
I'm actually glad they also got Williamson back as the writer. I think it's back to the same old tricks, but who knows if they will actually work.
@Sammy
I'm not too hopeful either but I'm still intrigued to watch this one. I hope it will, at least, do justice to the first film.
@Brclay
April is just like a crucial time to release a horror film now instead of October :)
@Flavius
I'm glad you found it fresh and fun :)
I've never been a fan of the franchise - I thought it was, well, watchable - nothing mor,e nothing less. I don't get the hype, seriously.
is Scream 4 even necessary? this series played out years ago.
Scream 4, judging by the trailers, looks pretty good. To be honest I found 'Scream' to be overrated, the weakest and least involved of the series. I actually would say 'Scream 2' was the best installment.
I for one am looking forward to seeing where Craven and Kevin plan on taking this new trilogy and hope for this one to be a success so we do in fact get a Scream 5 and 6 as planed.
@Georgi
Not a huge fan of the franchise myself. But it still entertaining watching ghostface and its victims in such a 'cleverness contest' :)
@Lopez
Well, the filmmakers and producers though it's necessary enough :)
@Fred
Never knew 'Scream 2' is the best one for you but thanks for sharing your opinion about the series, buddy ;)
@Magnums
We all shall see if this one is really good enough to eventually generate another 'Scream' trilogy :)
I'm a big fan of the first two Scream movies but didn't think much of the third instalment. I can't say I'm anticipating this with any degree of urgency but it'll be interesting which one of the main three end up dead. I'm also interested how they are going to tie the ending up with the original films which they tried to do at the end of Scream 3. Whose mother/best friend/illegitimate child will be the killer(s)?

Glad to know your opinion about this franchise, Dan. There should be many interesting things going on in this fourth part if they spring a good connection with the previous films.
@Jimmy
Thanks! I'll check your site.
What they should do is having 3 killers over the course of 3 films and do it as a Saw kind of end so you know there is another killer but you wont find out who until the next movie and they are all connected to tie them up.
It looks fun enough to watch in the theatre. What made the original scream great for me was that the actual Mystery was popcorn-pleasure
I can't wait to see this movie. finally a good horror film, we haven't had one in years. Can't wait to see Neve Cambell on the screen again.
@JJ
You just came out with something to think about, buddy :) I hope Craven or Williamson also have the same idea in their mind :)
@Anonym
Thanks for dropping by and sharing your opinion.
@Ken
Good to know it. I reckon you're one of the huge fans of 'Scream' series.
I hate these sequels
@meandmythinkingcap
Everyone has their right to love or hate these sequels. Welcome and thanks for sharing your opinion :)
I'm ridiculously excited for this one. I've been championing its release since the Williamson script was announced, and even harder when Wes Craven's direction was official. I love the cast, and have fairly high hopes.
Honestly, though, even if it's a train wreck, it'll still be loads of fun.
Hexibar, I believe there will be loads of fun in this installment. It's good to see the original crew back. I hope this flick brings something new to the horror genre--in the wake of all these remakes and reboots.
Im a Big fan of the scream movies can wait for the 4th one to come out! I just hope that we can relive the 90's through this film.
Welcome, Bluej and thanks for the comment. I wish the film can really meet our expectation.
I am a huge fan of horror movies and i am really excited for this one.
